Acadian Farmers

The image is a recreation at the Acadian Historical Village of the early days when Acadians used horses for ploughing the fields and various other tasks related to farming. The people are wearing period costumes and are engaged in doing farming as it was done in the 1800s.

The Acadian settlers came to Chignecto area in 1672. They began the task of reclaiming marshland and started growing crops. The first settlements were in Beaubassin and Aulac areas.

Initially the farmers used oxen in the farming but later horses were used. The Acadian farmers grew flax, rye, corn, barley and hemp for themselves and their livestock.
