Birch Bark Canoe

The birch bark canoe was the primary mode of transportation of Mi'kmaq people. The light weight, resilient, and waterproof birch bark was ideal for making light weight canoes that could be portaged easily over land. This birch bark canoe is hand-painted by artist Indu Varma directly on a ceramic tile. Textures and glazes are added to make this a 3-D image.
