Old Farm Equipment

This old farm equipment is representative of the farming done in the Tantramar region by various groups.

The Acadians farmed on the reclaimed fertile marsh soil. They were very skilled in constructing dykes and reclaiming land.

They built solid walls (dykes) stopping the sea water from coming. They dug ditches or canals to further drain the land. The water would flow towards an aboiteau which would open only towards the sea.

Subsequently, New England planters came to this area and engaged in farming.

In fact, there is a similar piece of old farm equipment lying behind the present day Carriage House Museum, which used to be the site of early Acadian settlers.
